Pastry dough can be used for many delicious treats like tarts, pie crust, quiches and also pizza crust. Here is a recipe for a quick pastry dough that you can store in the refrigerator for use whenever you want to make hors d’oeuvres or a scrumptious dessert. Although professional baking and pastry programs are available for additional pastry recipes and techniques, this is simply a basic recipe to use at home.
To begin, you’ll need to combine the first three ingredients in a mixing bowl, which are 4 and a half cups of all-purpose flour, a fourth cup of sugar and a fourth cup of salt. Then take a half cup of vegetable shortening, along with a half cup of unsalted butter and cut into the dry ingredients using your hands or a pastry blender. Mix it until you have a crumbly, well blended consistency. Continue blending while you add a couple of tablespoons of cold water at a time, up to eight can be used in order to get the desired uniformity of the dough.
Gather the dough into two equal size balls and wrap them tightly in a zip-lock bag or plastic wrap. Put the dough in the refrigerator until you want to use it. Allow the dough to sit at room temperature for about a half an hour and then roll out your perfect pastry dough according to your favorite recipe.
