Tips for Paying for College

College is one of those things that everybody needs, but not everybody can get. It’s darn expensive to pay for college, and unfortunately current tuition rates have prices a great many people out of the market for higher education.
However, with a combination of cutting costs and getting financial aid, you may be able to squeeze out enough money to pay for college — and not be in too much debt from student loans when you graduate. Here are a few suggestions for how to pay for college.
- Reduce your living expenses. If you can save money by moving into a smaller place for a few years, do it. Or move back home. Regardless, you don’t have to get rid of your stuff — self storage will keep it until you graduate. It’ll be worth it if it helps you get a degree.
- Eat cheaply. We’ve all heard the stereotype of the college student who lives off of ramen noodles, but honestly, your grocery budget is one of the best places to get money for college tuition and books. You can live off of ramen — at least for a while!
- Buy books used and sell your old books. Textbooks usually aren’t included in tuition, but they are a huge expense for any student. You can shave it down by buying your books used — check online for better deals than your school bookstore can give you. Also, sell your old books at the end of the semester to get cash for next semester’s books.
- Consult the financial aid office. Your school’s financial aid office may be able to help you get grants, scholarships, or loans. Just be sure you know the difference, and don’t borrow too much, because the interest will continue to add up while you’re in school — and you may end up with more debt than you bargained for on graduation day!
Can you think of any other ways to help fund your college education?
